The Liminality Project is a community-building and educational endeavour comprised of zines, printed ephemera and a website and the work of which took place throughout an entire year. Looking at the concepts of intersectionality as well as the Liminal self, the Liminality Project aims to find ways to create a space where people of colour and mixed-race individuals can take a moment to reflect upon their own experiences.

The Project allows the viewer to consider how they interact with the world, how the world perceives themselves and their bodies, and highlights the importance of finding community within and representation of marginalized groups. The Project’s initial conception was sparked by an interest in the intersections of identity that are inherent within BIPOC and mixed-race individuals, and the desire to create a safe space to explore these ideas beyond coloniality.

The Project is comprised of three components:

  • The Liminal Ephemera: a re-imagining of the zine or chapbook, which details the aspects of life that make up the Liminal Self, which are the Body, Community, Language, Space;
  • The Liminal Reader: a small brochure that explains the concept of Liminality and acts as a gateway to the Project’s digital space; and
  • The Webspace, which provides a space to learn about Liminality as well as the opportunity to become a participant in the Project through the sharing of personal artefacts and liminal memories. It acts as part archive, part virtual community.

  • The Liminality Project is an opportunity to learn; it is a space to explore without judgement. Ultimately, its purpose is to allow BIPOC folks the chance to reflect on the bittersweetness, nostalgia, and joy of overlapping identities and cultural influences.
