ARA PENNER

Working with visceral and violent imagery of the body. I aim towards displaying flesh beyond composition under the guise of societal beauty fueled by capitalistic intentions. building a space for the grotesque to be embraced. offering a different beauty composed through the distorted and devalued flesh-based forms that live within us.

I Strive not to just make separate paintings but a continuous dialogue of bodily discomfort, perpetuated through a process of collaging randomly fused appendages influenced through a lens of dysmorphia.

My work in a way acts like a visual journal. Using odd and discomforting compositions, taking fears and insecurities into my safe place allowing me space to analyze and take in the information at my own pace/ discretion.

These painting aim to represent the body beyond mirrors and photographs we traditional view ourselves. The human body is imperfect and imperfect mediums such as painting offer a more honest method for which to analyze our understanding of the individual beyond the flesh.

“surreal subconscious” is a series I have been developing that focuses on dream interpretations/ interactions with the body that I have experienced, depicting “stalker nightmares” that have followed me over the years and disturbing dreams.

“Meat pie hand’s” is painting which comes from a reoccurring nightmare from childhood where my hands transformed into meats pies, differing between being cooked, raw or rotten with maggots.

“Ripped away” is a painting that showcases a dream where my nipple piercing was ripped out dragging with it a mysterious huge green vein leaving little to no blood.

“Double reflection” Is a Solomon and ominous representation of me looking into a mirror at my emotional reflection of my body within a void like landscape.

These new viewpoints of the body give with them new struggles. Remembering these fleeting internal visual narratives and understanding the symbolism, colour and placement of the unconscious thoughts.

Reality has guidelines and limitations within its existence for which dreams do not abide. Allowing me to not just take the feelings of my body but investigate the unconscious fears and lingering thoughts that follow me and translate them into a tangible visual.
